Which Plantation Shutters Hinge is Stronger?

| Which hinge is stronger? The plantation shutters hinge on the left or right? The answer is the hinge on the right side of this photo is stronger than the hinge on the left side. The right hinge is called a self mortising hinge. it is called self mortising because it doesn’t require that the shutter panel be mortised to prevent light gaps. When this hinge closes it is still only one layer of metal instead of two like most hinges. self mortising hinges give you a much tighter fit between the window casing and plantation shutter panel.
The hinge on the left side of the photo also gives you only one layer of metal when closed for a tighter fit, but the strength is compromised by having a separate top and bottom portion of the hinge. On the left hinge, the bottom part of the hinge is attached to the window casing and the top part of the hinge is attached to the shutter panel. If a really wide plantation shutter panel is attached to those hinges, eventually the top part of those hinges will start separating from the window casing because they only are attached by the bottom half of the hinge.
The self mortising hinge is stronger because of the part of the hinge that is attached to the plantation shutter panel is sandwiched between (top and bottom) the hinge that is attached to the window casing. The right hinge holds the plantation shutter panel close to the window casing like it is supposed to.
When shopping for window treatments such as blinds, shutters and shades in Wilmington, NC, be sure to check out what type of hardware is attaching your window coverings to the window casings. You can have the finest quality window blinds or plantation shutters, but if they are not attached to the windows with the proper hardware they will not function as well as they should. Make sure you ask to look at the type of hinges that the plantation shutters come with.

3. Are the staples for the tilt rod made of stainless steel?
